Stiff first thing, better once you're moving, cranky after you overdo it. Osteoarthritis is the body's most common joint condition — and 'wear and tear' is only half the story. Joints are living tissue: how they're moved, loaded and supported changes how arthritis feels, at any age.
What’s actually going on
Osteoarthritis is cartilage change plus the joint's whole response — stiffness, altered mechanics, muscle guarding, flare cycles. In the spine it shows up as facet arthritis; in hips, knees and hands as the familiar stiffness pattern. It is common, manageable, and distinctly different from inflammatory arthritis (rheumatoid and its cousins), which needs rheumatology.
Common causes we see
- Age and genetics — the base rates
- Old injuries: joints remember fractures and sprains
- Load patterns: occupational kneeling, heavy labor, obesity's extra miles
- Deconditioning — the vicious cycle of moving less because it aches, and aching more because you move less
How we evaluate it
Which joints, which pattern, and crucially which kind: long morning stiffness, symmetric small-joint involvement or systemic signs point toward inflammatory arthritis and get referred to medical care. Mechanical osteoarthritis gets a function-focused exam: motion, strength, and the compensations feeding the ache.
How chiropractic care may help
The evidence-consistent core of OA care is movement and strength — and that's what we build, joint by joint: mobilization and gentle adjustment to keep segments moving, soft-tissue care for guarded muscles, modalities for flares, and progressive exercise dosed to your joints. Honest expectations: care may improve pain, stiffness and what you can do; nobody regrows cartilage, and joints in replacement territory get told the truth.
What to expect
Arthritis rewards consistency over intensity. Expect a sustainable routine, not a boot camp — and Medicare patients: we'll explain exactly what Part B does and doesn't cover before care begins.
⚠ When to seek medical care instead
Medical referral for: hot, swollen single joints with fever (infection until proven otherwise), symmetric small-joint stiffness lasting over an hour in the mornings (inflammatory workup), or rapidly worsening function.
Care framework: exercise as first-line OA management per OARSI/ACR guidance.

Is it safe to adjust arthritic joints?
With an exam-first approach, care is modified to the joint in front of us — gentler techniques, mobilization instead of manipulation where appropriate. Arthritic joints usually crave motion; the skill is dosing it.
Cracking my knuckles gave me arthritis, right?
No — studies have looked, and knuckle-cracking doesn't cause arthritis. (The pop is gas cavitation, not damage.) Family history and injuries matter far more.
What actually slows arthritis down?
Strength around the joint, weight management where relevant, and staying active — the unglamorous trio with the real evidence. We coach all three alongside hands-on care.
What patients say
Reno Patients, In Their Own Words
“First time here… Friendly and efficient receptionist, she explained everything in detail. I saw Dr. Bader. Listened to my areas of pain, explained many things and my first adjustment was great. He is also friendly, has good “bedside” manners. They are a hometown health provider.”
“I’ve been seeing Dr. Bader for the last 15 years. He is extremely knowledgeable and has a great bedside manor. The office is very well run… Most insurance is accepted and if it’s not, the cash plan is very reasonable. Walk in’s are acceptable and same day appointments are most likely.”
“Dr Bader is a Super Chiropractor! Palmer educated.”
“They actually work on fixing your issues with adjustments and therapy and get you in and out of the office in a timely manner.”
