You turn your whole body to check a lane change. The stiffness that started at a desk now greets you every morning. Neck pain rarely announces a single cause — it accumulates, and it responds best to care that starts with a careful examination.
What’s actually going on
The cervical spine balances a 10-to-12-pound head on seven small vertebrae all day. Modern life points that head down at screens for hours, and the joints, discs and muscles register every one of them. Most neck pain is mechanical — joint restriction, muscle guarding, postural load — and evaluable with hands and orthopedic testing.
Common causes we see
- Sustained screen posture — 'tech neck' is a load problem, not a buzzword
- Sleeping position and pillow mechanics
- Joint restriction in the cervical or upper thoracic spine
- Stress carried as trapezius and levator tension
- Degenerative change — common with age and often manageable
- Old injuries (including whiplash) that never got evaluated
How we evaluate it
History, then a focused exam: cervical range of motion, orthopedic tests, neurological screening of the arms (strength, reflexes, sensation) to check whether a nerve is involved, and palpation to find the segments that aren't moving. If anything suggests more than a mechanical problem, we say so and refer appropriately.
How chiropractic care may help
Care may combine gentle, specific cervical adjustments — with lower-force options for patients who prefer them — plus soft-tissue work, physiotherapy modalities and posture-focused exercises. Many patients find meaningful relief over a short course of care; progress is re-measured rather than assumed.
What to expect
First visit runs about 45 minutes: history, exam, findings in plain English, and — when appropriate — first treatment the same day.
⚠ When to seek medical care instead
Seek medical care promptly for neck pain with fever or unexplained weight loss, after significant trauma (car crash, fall from height — get imaging first), with progressive arm weakness or clumsiness, or a sudden severe 'worst-ever' headache. These are screened at every new-patient exam.

Is neck manipulation safe?
Serious complications are rare, and we screen every patient's history and risk factors before any cervical care — and offer low-force techniques when they fit better. Ask us about this directly at your exam; it deserves a real conversation, not fine print.
Why does my neck pop on its own?
Joint surfaces separating create a harmless gas-release pop (the same physics as knuckles, shown on real-time MRI). Frequent self-cracking that you feel compelled to do usually signals an underlying restriction worth examining.
Can my neck cause my headaches?
Yes — cervicogenic headaches start in the neck's joints and muscles and refer upward. It's one of the specific patterns we test for; see our headaches page.
What patients say
Reno Patients, In Their Own Words
“First time here… Friendly and efficient receptionist, she explained everything in detail. I saw Dr. Bader. Listened to my areas of pain, explained many things and my first adjustment was great. He is also friendly, has good “bedside” manners. They are a hometown health provider.”
“I’ve been seeing Dr. Bader for the last 15 years. He is extremely knowledgeable and has a great bedside manor. The office is very well run… Most insurance is accepted and if it’s not, the cash plan is very reasonable. Walk in’s are acceptable and same day appointments are most likely.”
“Dr Bader is a Super Chiropractor! Palmer educated.”
“They actually work on fixing your issues with adjustments and therapy and get you in and out of the office in a timely manner.”
