Can a chiropractor really help with headaches?
Safety & Evidence · answered by Dr. Alan S. Bader, DC — Chiropractic Physician.
The short answer
For cervicogenic headaches — pain referred from the neck's upper joints — yes, the mechanism and evidence are reasonable: treat the neck problem and many patients' headache frequency drops measurably. For tension-type headaches, care may help alongside stress and posture work. For migraines, honesty required: care may reduce neck-related triggers for some patients; it is not a migraine cure.

The evaluation is the value: distinguishing cervicogenic patterns (one-sided, skull-base origin, provoked by neck position) from tension-type and from true migraine changes everything about care — including whether chiropractic care is even the right tool. Red-flag headaches get referred before anything else happens; that screening is non-negotiable.
We track headache days as the honest scoreboard — frequency and intensity, logged simply. Progress that shows in numbers beats progress that's remembered generously.
Migraine patients keep their medical management; our lane is the mechanical contribution, coordinated rather than competing. Both-and, not either-or.
