Does chiropractic actually work for back pain?
Safety & Evidence · answered by Dr. Alan S. Bader, DC — Chiropractic Physician.
The short answer
For low back pain, the evidence is genuinely solid: the American College of Physicians' clinical guideline (Annals of Internal Medicine, 2017) recommends spinal manipulation among first-line, non-drug treatments for both acute and chronic low back pain. It's not a cure-all — and any clinic claiming cures should worry you — but for mechanical back pain, manipulation has mainstream-guideline support.

The ACP guideline matters because it comes from medical physicians, not chiropractic advocacy — it reviewed the evidence and placed manipulation alongside exercise, heat and other conservative care as what to try before medications for most back pain.
Honest boundaries: evidence supports manipulation for mechanical spine pain, headaches of cervical origin, and related musculoskeletal problems. It does not support chiropractic treatment of organ disease, infections, or the systemic conditions some fringe marketing implies — and you'll never see those claims here.
The practical upshot for a Reno patient: a guideline-supported, drug-free first option, delivered by a doctor who examines first and measures progress — with referral out when your case belongs elsewhere.
